Swołowo is considered the capital of the “Land of Checkered Houses” and proudly holds the title of European Village of Cultural Heritage.
A competition for the town hall’s design was announced throughout Germany. A total of 486 architects participated, submitting 87 designs. The first prize was awarded to Karl Zaar and Rudolf Vahl. The Słupsk Town Hall is considered Karl Zaar’s masterpiece. Construction began in April 1899, and on July 4th, 1901, the building was officially opened and handed over to the city authorities.
Located in the city center, the town hall closes off the large Victory Square (Plac Zwycięstwa) from the west. Its prominent position makes it an important part of the urban landscape. The tall tower dominates the surroundings and can be seen from all directions. The slender tower and the red color of the roof and bricks emphasize the building’s Neo-Gothic character.
